In a world where athletes and celebrities are constantly spewing left-wing drivel, it’s encouraging as well as refreshing when a lone wolf is committed to standing up for individualism and scrapping the group-think mentality that dominates pop culture.
The 2011 Stanley Cup Champion Boston Bruins were invited to the White House by the Dear Leader but made the team appearance Monday without their future Hall of Fame goalie Tim Thomas.
Thomas, the 2011 Conn Smythe Trophy winner, released the following statement regarding his decision:
I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People.
This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers vision for the Federal government.
Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL.
This is the only public statement I will be making on this topic. TT
Of course the mainstream media as well as the liberal sports journalists were left scratching their heads. Joe McDonald of ESPN Boston claimed that Thomas “picked the wrong time to make a statement”. When would be a good time, Mr. McDonald. There’s never a good time when you and your liberal sports-journalist buddies are reporting the news. Maybe you would have preferred that he make a political statement while the Bruins were celebrating their Stanley Cup victory. Maybe when the team was awarded the cup. Maybe Thomas should have made his statement right there at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia on June 15, 2011. I’m sure you would have written about the poignancy of such a moment.
McDonald self-righteously quipped: “..when the president of the United States invites you and all your teammates to the White House to honor your Stanley Cup championship, you go and represent the team. On Monday, Thomas instead chose to represent himself.” Whatever happened to the First Amendment. Apparently if the Dear Leader summons you to the White House, you have to goose-step to Washington D.C. regardless of your opinion on the matter. Of course if this was being done while Bush 43 was president, Mr. McDonald would be applauding the heroic patriotism of Thomas. That’s how it typically works.
Mr. McDonald, Tim Thomas has every right to personally decline the invitation. I would have declined it as well. And by the way, Thomas and his declination to attend the White House is not a show of disrespect to the Bruins and it is not dishonorable – especially with regards to the Stanley Cup Championship. Thomas is one of the hardest working, most competitive players in the NHL and he earned that championship just as much as anybody else on the team. He did his part – and then some. He doesn’t owe it to the president to show up at the White House.
Here’s another delusional observation from the sports editors of the Washington Post: Thomas “had a chance to tell the leader of the free world what he thinks it means to be an American today. Not just any American, mind you, but an Olympian, a multimillionaire, a hero in the city where he works, and a member of a championship team that has been a source of joy to millions of Bostonians for nearly a century. Instead, Thomas took his pads and blocker to another end of town and issued his statement. He could have talked to the president. Instead, he mailed one in from the pizza stand. I think he missed his chance. I think he missed the point of the day. I think he mistreated his teammates.”
Thomas should have went and told Obama about “what he thinks it means to be an American today”? As if Obama cares. I’m sure the president would have really listened intently to the worries that Thomas has for the country and for the size and scope that government has taken on. What a complete and utter joke. Thomas did himself a favor by not wasting time with our narcissist president.
Liberals frequently rant about the freedom of expression but only if it promotes their agenda. Democrat politicians, media hacks, environmentalists, feminists, Hollywood film stars and musicians; they all stand up for it until it doesn’t jibe with their ideology.
Thank you, Tim Thomas, for actually showcasing a shred of intelligence.
Don’t Tread On Me.
